Guide to Tomales Bay

February 2, 2015

IMG_9224

It’s been 3 years in the making – a day trip to Tomales Bay.

IMG_9063

A couple weekends ago, I excitedly checked it off my bucket list (with the help of my sister) and wanted to share our agenda, so you too can get in on the fun!

Map

First stop? Point Reyes Station.

IMG_8967

This is an adorable town with some fun stops to make before heading to Tomales Bay.

After the drive we needed to grab a bite, so we made our way to The Station House Cafe to enjoy a leisurely brunch in their garden patio.  If you are in the area be sure to try their Cobb salad and macaroni and cheese.

We popped into a few shops — including Flower Power, an adorable home goods store meets flower shop, then headed to Toby’s to grab some honey,  stone fruit and any other fun picnic items you need for what is sure to be an amazing day.

But save the wine and cheese purchases for  Cowgirl Creamery, where they not only had an amazing to-go counter to order yummy sandwiches, but make all their cheese in-house (be sure to grab the Mt. Tam) and have a great assortment of jams (including Blue Chair).

Next, make your way up to Hog Oyster (no not this one), and snagged a seat at their great waterfront picnic area.  Be sure to grab some oysters to enjoy with your amazing picnic spread (and don’t forget to try their bread – it was described to me as “best in the land”).

We ordered both the BBQ oysters and raw oysters… and both were nothing short of amazing. Also it’s worth checking out to understand the seating process – long story short if you want to shuck your own oysters you need to make a reservation months in advance to score a table.  Otherwise you can bring your own wine/beer, food and wait in line to order shucked oysters (and an assortment of charcuterie, cheese plates, salads, etc. if you don’t want to pack a picnic) and sit on the upper deck.

Seating is limited, but the great part is, depending on your group size, you can be sat with other parties – which in our case ended up being one of the best parts of our day! Making new friends over oysters? Yes please.

The hardest part about planning this trip was trying to pick which oyster spot to go to.  But why choose? Go to as many as you can!  Sadly (not really), we were too obsessed with Hog Oyster to get back in the car and continue down the “Oyster Trail” – but there are great spots like Tomales Bay Oysters and the Marshall Store for more eats and stunning views.

Depending on your schedule and aptitude for eating a lot of oysters, this day can be as long (or short) as you’d like.  But make sure to bring a fun friend (or 2), cozy layers, and some portable wine glasses. Also be aware most places open at 11am, and close at 5pm – so don’t get too late of a start!

Guide to Healdsburg

December 9, 2014

IMG_1301

I love finding new gems and Healdsburg has skyrocketed to the top of my favorites list.  We only spent 24 hours in town, and I can’t wait to fully enjoy all that this amazing town has to offer.  In the mean time, here were the highlights of a quick (but eventful stay):

IMG_6971

Where to Stay: Hotel Healdsburg

  • This is definitely an indulgent spot, but well worth it in my opinion.  From free rental bikes, floor to ceiling glass windows throughout the premises, charming gardens decorated with string lights, a gorgeous spa, a delicious complimentary breakfast (complete with lox and bagels, omelet bar, and waffles), and my favorite – the most comfortably luxurious bed, this is a spot I could DEFINITELY get used to.  Also, did I mention that it’s located in the heart of Healdsburg?  Walking distance to every possible shop, restaurant and wine tasting room, this really is the place to be.

IMG_0679

Where to Eat: Willi’s Seafood & Raw Bar

  • I was lucky enough to have our awesome friends fill us in on this hot spot.  Complete with an impressive oyster bar, super personable staff and one of the best lobster rolls I’ve ever had, this definitely is a necessary lunch spot for anyone in the area. The charred ahi with avocado puree and truffled soy, and the pork belly sliders are not to be missed!

Chalkboard

  • We enjoyed an early lunch at this spot and love Healdsburg’s obsession with small plates.  We were able to try the hamachi crudo, warm pretzels with house made sauces, fried chicken with yogurt and basil, and lamb barbacoa tacos – all equally delicious. I enjoyed it with the Sauv Blanc wine flight (had to get a little wine tasting in while in wine country right!) and enjoyed the super cool vibe and awesome decor.

Where to Play: Shed

  • Similar to my love for The Makery, Shed has a very similar vibe but really takes it to a new level.  Just when I thought I’d seen every artisan food product available, Shed introduced me to rows and rows of sauces, spices, jams, syrups, etc. that I never heard of! I would list some of my favorites – but we did a lot of Christmas shopping (so my secrets will have to wait). If you are looking for gorgeous home goods this is your one stop shop.

Saint Dizier

  • I’m on a home goods kick (sorry I’m not sorry), and this shop was like walking into my dream home… think cowhide rugs, vintage Hermes serving trays and beautiful stemware. Out of my price range… but a girl can dream!

While our trip was too short, I definitely can’t wait to add more must see spots to this list for next time.                                                I’d love any suggestions anyone has to share!

A couple of weekends ago my family was able to pack up and make the trip to San Luis Obispo to watch my sister’s boyfriend play in a Cal Poly football game.  Despite an eventful Halloween night (thanks to our awesome neighbors), we were able get on the road early Saturday for an eventful 48 hours.

It has become a bit of a tradition for J and I to sneak away to Hawaii for his birthday weekend and this year was a one for the books!  I felt it fitting for a long overdue Happiness Files.

Guide to Los Altos

October 27, 2014

IMG_5750

This summer I vowed to work on being more “adventurous,” but with pool weather calling my name, I got a little side tracked.  Now that fall is finally upon us, I’ve dedicated to start visiting local towns and learning about where I live! First up? Los Altos.

IMG_5741

IMG_5761

The goal of the day was to visit First & Main Sports Lounge to watch J’s favorite team in action.  While this was a great sports bar, my idea of a fun day does not include 4 hours of beer, football and no windows, so my bestie Erin and I were able to break away for a little exploring and girls time.

Here were some of the highlights:
