Weekend Getaway with Hotels.com

October 9, 2014

IMG_5434

Fall tends to be my husband and I’s busiest travel time of the year… I think subconsciously it has to do with easing the sadness of summer being over – but either way, I’ll take it!  This month we are all over the place (for work and play) – Vegas, Hawaii, San Luis Obispo, Wisconsin, Arizona – and that many trips take a LOT of planning.

IMG_5452

J introduced me to Hotels.com – an awesome hotel booking website that allows you to book your trips at the best and lowest price, plus has a no change or cancellation fees.  To have all of your bookings in one place is super convenient (especially for any last minute changes or bookings), but the best part of Hotels.com membership is their Welcome Rewards Program.  It’s free to join and after booking 10 nights with Hotels.com they give you one free night to redeem on future bookings! So awesome… honestly.

This past weekend we ventured to Southern California (for business and pleasure) and used the opportunity to stock up on some Welcome Rewards points at the Shore Hotel in Santa Monica. This modern, eco-conscious hotel was only a few blocks from the Santa Monica pier and a primo location from all of the amazing shopping and restaurants (not to forget – gorgeous ocean front views!).

IMG_5454

I wanted to share a few snaps from the property, as well as our favorite restaurants and activities (which were ALL walking distance from our hotel)… so here we go!

IMG_9255

Brunch

  • M Street Kitchen: J LOVES this spot – so much that we go back every time we are in town.  Great breakfast sandwiches and breakfast tacos – and a nice 10 minute walk from the hotel.
  • The Ivy at the Shore:  This meal is a splurge, but a really fun thing to do (budget permitting).  It is located next door to the Shore Hotel… and great location aside, they make sure to pull out all of the stops – complimentary champagne when you arrive, a dozen roses in beautiful centerpieces on each table, the most delicious scones and homemade jam delivered when you sit down… plus the Crab Benedict with a Sriracha English Muffin that I ordered, was one of my favorite breakfast items of all time. Treat yo self!

Lunch

  • Blue Plate Oysterette: I love this place so much I went back two days in a row (and sat next to Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell!).  Their oysters are some of the best I’ve ever had… and their ahi tacos and lobster rolls may be on my top 10 list of favorite foods.  Throw in a glass of rose and you’re all set!
  • Blue Plate Taco: I loved the decor (fun tiled floors, massive light fixtures) almost as much as I loved the tacos and margaritas.  Adding guacamole and ceviche to your order will ensure the perfect meal. This spot is literally next door to the Shore Hotel… so getting back to your room after an extra margarita won’t be an issue! (PS yes this is Blue Plate Oyster’s sister restaurant… you can see we really ventured out.)

Dinner

  • Michael’s: We were hosted for a business event in the beautiful garden at Michael’s Santa Monica.  The artwork was a bit of a turn off (a bit creepy for my taste)… but the food was delicious.
  • Sushi Roku: A couple blocks from the Shore Hotel, this is consistently a great sushi spot.  The servers are amazing (my husband often goes there when traveling down south and always has the best experience) – and the Sherminator works there… so that has to say something.

Snacks

  • Nekter: I had my first Acai bowl and felt SO LA (and loved it). These things are delicious – and I truly can’t wait to track down a spot that makes them in the Bay Area (any recommendations!?)
  • Ice Cream Truck: The most gourmet food trucks line up alongside the beach… and I was so excited to try some vegan ice cream for the cutest yellow ice cream truck – not sure on the name… but if you are local, I HIGHLY recommend the mint chip!

So if you haven’t taken advantage of the awesome rewards program at Hotels.com, I urge you to do so… because while taking a vacation is amazing, taking a free vacation is even better.

SF Recap

August 18, 2014

I was lucky enough to hang with my 3 favorite ladies (my mom and 2 sisters) and head to the city for a fun girls trip last weekend.  Here were some of the highlights (via my iPhone):

Picture 2834

Picture 2838

Thursday night dinner at Bar Agricole – this place has the most amazing vibe… one of our favorite parts? The custom lighting fixtures by Nick Weinstein.  Be sure to try the scallops & peaches starter, fried halibut & squash blossom appetizer, summer soup, gem salad and the petrale sole (if they have it… it was a special).  Their bourbon cocktails were delicious too!

Picture 2852

Picture 2848

One of my favorite friends is ditching Cali for Boston (boooo) and hosted her going away party at Harper & Rye – which I loved.  Be sure to grab the Frankie & Levi if you are into bourbon…

Picture 2858

We started our Friday morning off with a kick butt workout class at my sister’s gym, and then worked our way to the ferry building for our favorites – Blue Bottle hot cocoa, Cowgirl Creamery breakfast sandwiches and Pressed Juicery green juice.

Picture 2868

Picture 2866

After a morning of getting ready, we headed for a quick bite at Split – I highly recommend the No 7 and No 45 (on gluten free bread!).  They had great salads too…

Friday my sisters and I went to Outside Lands, kicking off the festivities at the Pandora pre-party and then making our way to Golden Gate Park.  I am not a regular in the festival scene (ok I’ve never been to one before), but it was a pretty awesome experience.  Dancing to Chromeo and Kayne with my sisters was definitely a highlight of the year and the amazing food didn’t hurt either 🙂

Saturday I hit up the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market to grab breakfast and do some shopping for the week.  If you are ever in the area be sure to stop by the SOW booth and try the Dame and/or Prescription, and then swing by the Craftsman-Wolves booth for some pastries (I was obsessed with the Creme Fraiche & Muscovado Morning Bun and the Yellow Corn, Stone Fruit & Basil Scone).

We spent the day shopping and then got ready and enjoyed an amazing meal at Hakkasan.  I’ve consistently had great dinners there and highly recommend the Crispy Duck Salad, Spicy Prawns, Sweet & Sour Pork with Pomegranate Seeds and the Exotic Fruit Platter).  Their cocktails are next level too…

Working on my wishlist for restaurants/shops for our next trip… any recommendations are welcomed!

Park City Recap

July 10, 2014

Utah 136

J and I are coming up on our 2nd year anniversary (eeii!) and wanted to take a fun trip somewhere new to commemorate it!  We ended up deciding on Park City, Utah and we couldn’t have been happier… here we’re some of the highlights:

ZMontage16

Monty the Bernese Mountain Dog and Montage Deer Valley mascot

Utah 052 Utah 060 ZMontage10 Utah 061 ZMontage9 ZMontage8

High West Distillery – the most amazing lunch spot in town… and they make their own peach vodka and a bunch of delicious whiskeys (we loved the famous shisito peppers, trout salad and pulled pork sandwich)

ZMontage6 ZMontage7 ZMontage5

The Utah Olympic Park was a blast – it is essentially an adult playground with TONS of fun activities – a ropes course, zip lining, a 30,000 ft slide, and bobsledding (make sure to check out the skiers training in the Olympic pool).  I’d recommend getting the Gold Pass ($65) so you can have access to all of the rides/activities.

Utah 129 ZMontage20 Utah 101 ZMontage19

We grabbed lunch at the Foundry Grill at Sundance, and enjoyed the gorgeous weather and the most AMAZING sugar cookie at 60 ft in the air on a gondola #yolo

ZMontage15 ZMontage14

The Montage provided a TON of fun activities (accessible through their rec center – Compass Sports).  We signed up for archery lessons… and let’s just say, I won’t be asked to channel my inner Merida anytime soon.

Montage1 Montage2 ZMontage3 ZMontage2 ZMontage11 ZMontage1

We were lucky enough to stay at the Montage Deer Valley, and let me just say – it doesn’t get any better than this spot – the decor, views and service are top notch and I am still trying to figure out a way to move in full time (they do have residences on the top floors… so a girl can dream!).

  Picture 2120 Picture 2023   Picture 2029 Picture 2061   Picture 2095

Some other Montage Deer Valley tips/highlights:

  • Take advantage of the beautiful Mercedes GL450 you can borrow for the day!  A great way to get around town…
  • Don’t miss Burgers and Bourbon onsite – one of our favorite dinner spots on location.  The fried pickles, Kobe hot dog, Lux burger and whiskey cocktails are NOT to be missed!
  • Apex (the fine dining establishment on site) has an amazing tableside Caesar salad, and a delicious Waygu beef with duck fat fries… also be sure to try their Thymeless cocktail invented by their sommelier!
  • The live music at the Vista Terrace is next level. Grab a glass of red and get some prime seating in front of the fireplace.
  • If you love smore’s this is your place – 7 types of homemade marshmallows – cinnamon, mocha, peppermint, vanilla, caramel, chocolate (don’t worry they have good ol’ Jet Puff too!) and 2 kinds of chocolate!
  • We also were lucky enough to tour the back kitchens.  Typically a resort of this size works off of ONE kitchen, but the Montage is proud of their 4 onsite kitchens – one dedicated JUST to creating the amazing truffles put on your pillow each night (coconut was my favorite flavor!)

Utah 096

Thank you the Hamaway’s and Montage Deer Valley for such a memorable weekend… we are so appreciative!
