Kitchen Necessities

March 28, 2013

Whether you are starting your wedding registry, moving into a new place or just rounding out your existing kitchen tool line-up, this is the post for you.

I am a gadget lover and living in a smaller home, has really made me choose which items deserve kitchen space. Here is my list of Top 5 favorites:

1. Kitchen Aid – From cookies to mashed potatoes this thing will make your life a million times easier. Yes, it takes up a lot of space, but throw those egg beaters away and clear some extra room… because this is worth it.  I own a KitchenAid KSM150PS 5 Qt Stand Mixer and LOVE it.  Shopping websites often have these on sale, so keep your eye out… but otherwise you can buy them anywhere from Kohls to William Sonoma (on sale now!).

2. Breville Hemisphere Control Blender – I know people die for the Vitamix blender, but the price tag gave me a mini heart attack… so after reading a Men’s Journal article that had the Breville beat out the Vitamix, I figured I had to give it a shot… and boy am I glad I did!  It makes amazing smoothies, grinds nuts and oatmeal to a powder, and makes snow out of ice! And for half the price… you can’t really beat it! Plus its $100 off at William Sonoma now!

3. Wustof Knives – We didn’t get knives as a wedding gift and we held out without a “normal knife set” for over 8 months before J had a fit and demanded we be grown ups and get some.  I went to Bed Bath and Beyond (with my 20% coupon…duh.) and made a b-line to the cutlery department.  The overwhelmed look on my face quickly caught the attention of an employee who helped me with this life changing purchase.  We knew we wanted Wustof and he confirmed this choice was a good one.  He directed me to a 10 piece set that had everything we would need for a “starter” kit – kitchen shears, bread knife, cook’s knife, etc. These knives are AMAZING, they are so sharp, the perfect weight, and cooking with nice knives is such a luxury… I’m still kicking myself for fighting this purchase for so long… don’t make the same mistake as me!

4. Salad Spinner – Having grown up with one of these I didn’t know until college that this wasn’t a staple in everyone’s homes.  Honestly trying to dry salad with paper towels is annoying and takes forever.  Do yourself a favor and spend the $20! I recommend filling it with water and putting the lettuce in it and letting it sit for a bit to really clean it (add a few ice cubes for crunchy lettuce!). Then take off the bottom portion to drain the water, then replace and use as directed!

5. Crock Pot – I don’t know what I’d do without this… I use it at least once a week (in the winter basically every night). I upgraded to this Costco version for the larger size and for $4o and a self timer capability you can’t beat it!

Some favorite gadgets that don’t need an explanation:

– Rösle Silicone Locking Tongs

– OXO 3-Piece Angled Measuring Cup Set

– Rösle Extra Fine Straight Peeler

– Chef’n® Black Garlic Press

– Glass and Store Rectangular Casserole

– Set of 12 Storage Bowls With Clear Lids

I could go on and on… but if you want any more input I’d be more than happy to share!

Gifting

March 21, 2013

030

My husband and I wanted to be better about gift giving in 2013.  We wanted to be better about cards, house warming gifts, hostess presents and any surprise birthday that may (or may not) have slipped our minds.

I love this idea because it allows me to shop, but it doesn’t really count because it’s for the “gift closet,” and J loves it because we are never showing up anywhere empty handed (one of my mom’s cardinal rules).

Due to limited space I bought an over the door organizer to act as our “gifting headquarters.”  I bought pretty gift wrap, and compiled all of our ribbon, gift tags, cards, gift bags, tissue and made sure to have some colored pens, tape and scissors available.

In the garage I store some good “finds” – ie vintage cocktail shakers, fun tumblers, pretty scarves, picture frames, designer flasks, candles… anything that J and I would like to receive (and often we buy doubles so we can “test” it out haha).

It makes gift giving so much more fun when we don’t have to be worried about running to a liquor store last minute for a bottle of wine… not that we’ve ever done that! 😉

The Stain Queen

March 14, 2013

image

My mom knows how to get every and any stain out… so when I drop tomato sauce on my white sneakers, or get a coffee stain on my wool sweater she knows how to save the day.  Here is a little cheat sheet to help you out:

Spaghetti Sauce on a Cotton T-Shirt

1. Put Oxi Clean on Stain, rub it and flush with tepid water (to get stain out)
2. Put Simple Green on stain and flush out with warmer water (to get grease out)
3. Repeat if necessary

Mud or Grass Stains on Sneakers

1. Spray with a pre-treatment spray (Shout)
2. Brush them down
3. Throw them in the laundry and wash with 1 towel
4. Let them air dry

Carpet Stains (Wine, etc.)

1. Clean with rubbing alcohol (use vodka as a back up)
2. It is a great soap-free cleaner

Spots/Discolored Arm Pits/Stains on White, Cotton Apparel

1. Dissolve Oxi Clean in a large bucket of warm water
2. Soak all whites for 24 hours
3. Wash in a normal wash cycle with like clothes
4. Behold sparkly new whites!

Let’s Brunch

March 11, 2013

Since we’ve moved into our new home together I’ve wanted to host a real party… nothing fancy, just something that required thought and planning. Brunch is one of my favorite meals, and with Spring approaching what better time to get some of my favorites together for a tasty meal?

Because our house is pretty tiny inside we decided to use our backyard as an entertaining space… considering our outdoor table is the size of our whole living room, we felt this may be a better move.

I found these vases at TJ Maxx for $10… I wanted to fill them with some gorgeous white roses, but settled for some lilac and cream carpet roses instead.

I downloaded some fonts on DaFont.com and printed simple menus on craft paper.

I put together a little makeshift mimosa/screwdriver bar area, with an old TV stand (not glamorous but it did the trick).

Spring Cleaning

March 7, 2013

image

With Spring approaching (yay March 20th!), I felt it a good time to share some of my favorite random cleaning tips.

Tips:

  • Use a Bounce Dryer Sheet to wipe down your baseboards.  It pulls up the dust or anything stuck to them… and who doesn’t want their baseboards smelling like fresh laundry!?
  • Don’t forget to clean major household appliance like your washer and dryer (don’t forget to wash the lint catcher every couple months with warm soapy water – dryer sheets can cause invisible build up that often catches dryers on fire!).  I also recommend cleaning your dishwasher every 6 months or so… I run a cup of white vinegar through a cycle then sprinkle baking soda at the bottom of your washer and run a quick cycle again.
  • Clean your window tracks! I do a quick clean with my vacuum’s attachment, then take a q-tip dipped in white vinegar to clean the grime.
  • I clean my blinds with a vacuum attachment typically, but when I “deep clean,” I put on an old sock and dip it in a solution of half white vinegar (that stuff is magic i tell you!) and half warm water. Run it along each blind and see the stuff that comes off!

Favorite Products:

  • Swiffer Sweeper – I DIE for this thing… you can use it wet or dry and it cleans everything right up and leaves a nice smell
  • Clorox Wipes – I’m convinced I’m going to cross-contaminate 24/7 (even when I’m not cooking meat), so these things are life savers.  Get them at Costco – they come in packs for 4 for super cheap (but isn’t everything super cheap at Costco?!)

Anyone have any random tips to share!?
