Fall Closet

October 17, 2013

As much as I procrastinate transitioning my closet each fall/spring, I do LOVE the outcome and the inspiration I get with my “new closet.”  I feel like I get a new wardrobe and love finding favorite pieces that you forget about during “off months.”

Jackets

While I covered a lot of my general “closet organizing game plan” in this post, I definitely added a slightly new approach this season.  My purging mindset has moved from my drawers, cabinets, garage, to now my closet.   I realized that I’m at a point in my life wear quality is more important that quantity.  If I find a pair of pants or a jacket that I love, I now buy them in multiple colors (I used to be horrified at the idea of that – “there are so many clothes in the world?! why settle on one style? – but now I understand how great it feels to find something that feels like it was made for you!). My latest obsession – the J.Crew Minnie Pant:

I also am on chunky knit sweater kick and wanted to display them in a prominent area (hence the front and center location).  I also edited my heels selections and stored away any sandals/wedges for warmer months, as to not take up valuable closet space.  I also like to display my favorite heels at eye level… along with my favorite purses and jewelry.

Heels

Another thing I did differently this year, was to store t-shirts and lounge wear in my dresser.  It’s easier to get dressed when my clothes are more spread out and less cramped in my closet.

Drawers

I also (SADLY), had to move my swimsuits back into storage containers, and pull my winter scarves out… oh the joys of fall…

Does anyone have any closet organization tips to share?

How to Clean a Cashmere Robe

October 10, 2013

Cashmere RobeOne of my favorite gifts of all time? My cashmere robe.  It is one of the most decedent items I own and feel so luxurious every morning I get to put it on.  (tip: gentlemen – take note with the holidays coming up wink wink).

The only downside with cashmere is it is slightly high maintenance… or so I thought.  But look no further! You don’t have to shell out $$ to dry clean your cashmere robe (or sweaters/socks/tops)… you actually can clean it at home.  Here is how to:

1. Wash out your sink or bathtub so that it is clean.  Fill with cold water.

Bathtub Faucet

2. Fill up water with a cashmere washing agent or mild detergent – ie Woolite or The Laundress Cashmere Wash (I used 3 cap-fulls).

3. Place garment in tub and fully submerge into water.

4. Gently knead and work detergent into the fabric. Make sure not to stretch or pull (cashmere is very delicate and you don’t want to disfigure it).

Detergent5. Let soak for 15 minutes.

6. Drain bathtub and refill with fresh, cold water (I used the showerhead attachment to rinse out the fabric).

Drain Bathtub7. Let soak in clean water and swish fabric to fully remove any soap.

8. Drain tub again and gently ball material to squeeze excess water out. Layout robe between towels on a drying rack or table (I did this outside, because a lot of water was still in the fabric).

Towel Dry9. Let robe fully dry… then cozy up in it with your favorite cup of tea… happy fall!

How to Get Gum Off Your Clothes

October 3, 2013

Bubble Gum

I was leaving an amazing dinner with my sister and hubby, and what does my sister notice on my brand new jeans?! GUM.  The worst thing anyway… or so I thought… One call into my mom later and I was all set… here is what I did (for denim)!

1. Take an ice cube to the gum stain.  You want to freeze it through (if you are working with a smaller garment you can put the whole thing in the freezer if you prefer).

2. Use a butter knife (or the backside of a dinner knife) to scrape the gum off.  It should come right off!

3. Repeat steps 1-2 until the stain is removed.

4. Run item through the wash with the hottest water the material can handle.

5. Make sure gum is totally removed from article of clothing before putting in the dryer (unless you air dry your clothing).

It will be good as new!
