Strawberry Grapefruit Poptail

August 16, 2013

What do you get when you combine a popsicle and a cocktail? A poptail!

Strawberry Grapefruit Vodka

When Pintrest first became the “hot thing” there was this image of a Corona Popsicle that kept popping up… eventually I just had to make it for myself… and was pretty bummed that they didn’t taste as great as they looked (what did I expect… I don’t even like beer that much to begin with!). So… when I came across this amazing line-up of “adult popsicles” I was pretty excited to give another recipe a try!

Popsicle

Strawberry Grapefruit Greyhound Poptail

From Bakers Royale

  • 8 oz Grapefruit Juice
  • 12-14 Strawberries
  • 5 oz Vodka
  1. Puree grapefruit juice and strawberries in a blender.
  2. Once combined, add vodka and puree for 20 more seconds.
  3. Pour mixture into popsicle molds and let freeze overnight.
  4. Enjoy quickly because these puppies melt… FAST!

Quick Tips – Household Edition

August 15, 2013

Here are some things I’ve researched lately and wanted to share:

1. How do you store your linens and keep them fresh?

  • Wash your sheets and fold them. Insert them into a pillowcase of the matching linen set.
  • Store in a bedroom or hallway closet (or somewhere dry).
  • For added freshness place a dryer sheet inside as well.

2. Do you need to buy a sifter?

  • Save your money and whisk your dry ingredients instead.  It should aerate everything sufficiently.

3. How often do you have to replace your cutting board?

  •  1st it’s best to keep one cutting board for meat and one for fruit/veggies (some even suggest a separate board for chicken). The meat boards should be plastic and a bamboo board is fine for produce.
  • It’s a good idea to replace plastic boards once they have deep grooves in them, because it’s a great place to harbor bacteria.
  • I recommend washing your cutting board then sanitizing it in the dishwasher.  Also, it’s very important that your cutting board is 100% before you put it away.

4. How do you keep your hands from getting sticky when rolling cookie dough?

  • I have a couple tips for this – 1. don’t use your hands and use an ice cream scoop like this (it helps to keep measurements the same also!)
  • Wet your hands before working with dough (this is also great for making meatballs or anything that requires you manipulate sticky dough)

Spanglish Sandwich

August 14, 2013

006

Ten years ago my family created our famous go-to breakfast sandwich based off the one from the film Spanglish.  It is so simple, but when made with ingredients from my mom’s garden, and organic produce… it is taken to the next level.

Egg Sandwich

Spanglish Breakfast Sandwich

Assemble the following between toasted sourdough toast:

  • Sliced heirloom tomatoes
  • Romaine lettuce
  • Sliced onion
  • Maple bacon
  • Sliced avocado
  • Fried egg
  • White cheddar cheese

004I recommend cooking the bacon, then frying the egg in the rendered bacon fat… shred the white cheddar on the hot egg and voila!  You also can put a little mayo on your toast, but I think it’s just as yummy without it!  Good morning!!!
